DIY Hair Bows

Just when I think things can't get any girlier around here, I prove myself wrong yet again.  Some of you may already know that one of my other hobbies is cooking.  I've been doing it since I was a kid sitting on my Grandmother's kitchen cupboard "helping" her make chocolate chip cookies.  So when I stumbled across Southern Plate many months ago, I was an instant fan.  One of the things I enjoy about Christy's blog is that now and again, she posts little craft ideas totally unrelated to cooking, like these hair bows.  She posted a tutorial for these bows a long time ago and I bookmarked it, waiting for a day like today when I'm looking for something new to do with the girls.

Supplies:  Ribbon (Pebbles, Strano, Michaels), Flowers (Prima, Maya Roads, Creative Café), Misc. Buttons

Over the past couple of days, I've made these four hair bows and I'm surprised to say how addicting it is.  What you also might not believe is that I iron my ribbon.  It's really a function of necessity since who wants a hair bow with folds in the ribbon?  I must admit, that I have a ribbon iron right in my craft room that makes the job quick and easy.  If I had to run up stairs to use the iron, I'd be much less anxious to do any ironing at all.  Ironing is right up there with sewing on my list of chores to put off until absolutely necessary.

So this is one extra step that I added.  I also added the flower detail since I think they look cute.  Besides that, I pretty much followed the tutorial exactly.

I experiemented with different size bows.

And different color schemes from bold and bright to monochromatic.

I just used what ribbon I had on hand.  Some of the ribbon is recycled from product packaging and clothing.  The bold stripe in the orange toned bow was actually a belt from a pair of shorts.

Here a couple of shots of the girls who now think they need to wear a hair bow everyday.

Everytime I moved to get a better angle of the bow, Julia moved too.  You get the idea of how proud she is of her bow even if you can't see it so well in this photo.  :)

I must have got a dud - I have this iron, and it's not worth the packaging it came it. It's crap.

However - I think these bows are SUPER CUTE!!!

Thanks, girls.

JJ - my ribbon iron is very hot. In fact, it warped the spot on my craft mat where it was sitting. Maybe you could get a replacement from the manufacturer??

Michelle - in my defense, I won the ribbon iron a couple of years ago! :)
