Getting to the Point

The focus of most every page is on the photo. That is the reason why we scrapbook, right? But what happens when there is more than one photo on a page? Is the focus evenly distributed between them all or is there one point where the eye is naturally guided and stops to rest for a moment? There is no right answer, but having a focal point is a great way to create a sense of flow on a page.

When scrapbooking a series of photos, choose one photo of the group that you want to draw attention to. This will be your focal point or in this case, focal photo. As you design your page, there are many ways to naturally draw the eye to your focal photo.

In this example, my focal photo is slightly larger than the others. I also chose a secondary focal point and framed a smaller photo with a chipboard snowflake and a doodled frame. Another way to draw attention to your focal point is through the use of color. Your focal photo may be in color while the other photos are black and white. You can also draw the eye naturally to the focal point with the placement of embellishments like arrows. There really is no right or wrong way to do it. So next time you're surfing the gallery take note of different ways people create a focal point on a page and give one of them a try.
